Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of ? medieval castle reads 'Mound some 30m by 15m. revetted stone recess at n end poss sepulchral or some form of defensive work. No further detail. Large mound of stones. No sign of a chamber but certainly a large cairn similar in dimensions and siting to PRN 75. Stone spread east to southwest in roughly triangular mound c. 12m long (CPAT 1997).'

Gatehouse Comments

Presumably one of the group of mounds recorded at this location in the RCAHMW Inventory and marked as 'pillow mounds' on the modern OS map, although it may be somewhat different in form to the other mounds and it's association with these coincidential. It is likely that this site has never seriously been considered as a medieval fortification. However, the presence of pillow mounds does suggest a high status landscape and a warrener's lodge is a possibility since the poor mortar in use in this part of Wales means buildings collapse in ways which can be particularly difficult to differentiate from natural scree mounds and clearance cairns.
