Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of ? castle/Iron Age hill fort reads 'Fieldname suggesting site of fortification. None is known here.'

An artificial mound, 19m NW-SE by 14m and 2.4m high, set upon a natural mound, c.40m in diameter. Excavation, 1951-68, revealed a complex constructional sequence, opening with a probable ditch round barrow with two burial pits, adapted to accommodate a secondary in-urned cremation. The mound material contained fragments of Neolithic pottery. (Coflein)

Gatehouse Comments

In fact close to Ysgwennant round barrow and it is more likely a reference to this castle-like feature. Close to road in valley and it is vaguely possible the barrow may have used as a medieval taxation point base. The barrow has been excavated and shown to be prehistoric in origin, although such prehistoric origin does not excluded medieval use although any such use must have been short time if nothing was found on this fairly intense excavation.
