Possible motte discovered by John Street.

"I would like to offer some additional information on a site on your list; Brynfanigl Uchaf Earthwork listed under Denbighshire, Wales. I visited this site earlier this year and due to my poor map reading ended up on the wrong side of the road in a farm field above the road. The field was on a hill and at the highest point I stumbled upon what appeared to me to be a motte and bailey earthwork. I photographed the site and forwarded these to John Northall who wrote about Brynffanigl Uchaf on the Castles of Wales website and also to the Clwyd and Powys Archaeological Trust. I've enclosed the feedback I have received and it does appear that this is another castle site in very close proximity to the other earthwork." (John Street 9-12-2005)

"I have had a look at the Historic Environment Record (HER) and we don't seem have a record for a motte on the other side of the road as you suggest. I took a look at our documentary records (including a site visit form from 1963) for Brynffanigl Uchaf Motte, to check if our location was correct and this does seem to be the case. It is therefore very possible you have identified a new site, which we were previously unaware of. I have shown your photographs to one of our field archaeologists, who does suggest these earthworks could be a motte. As a result we will make every effort to visit the site when our field archaeologists are in the area. In the mean time, if possible, we would like to keep your photographs for our records and will add the site to the HER."
