Tithe map of 1838 examined by John Newbury (1993) who writes "the third field called Castle Hill is adjacent to Ermin Street. It is the field immediately to the south-east of Castle Cottage at SO 94551360. A superb view over Nettleton Bottom can be obtained from that cottage and a castle situated nearby could have made full use of the steep sides of the valley to provide defence. Thus the information contained within the tithe survey arguably suggests an alternative location for an earlier castle, although there is now no field evidence to substantiate it. Significantly here the field immediately south of the one known as Castle Hill is called Munley - which means 'mound clearing'."

Gatehouse Comments

Place name evidence only. This is an area of dispersed settlement but this does not seem to be a manorial centre. The defensive quality of the site is dubious.
