No other author takes up this suggestion. The Wiltshire's Towns Extensive Urban Survey does point out that 'Despite the well documented origins and monastic focus of the town, there have been few archaeological finds from the Saxon period made in the town and the extent of the settlement is still unclear' and specifically states the town lacked defences (p. 5, 16)
