Circular cropmark of ditch of possible motte close to river crossing and by church. Upton on Severn was once a thriving medieval town with fairs and a market it also had a harbour for barges on the Severn. There is no record of a charter, but it is frequently described as a borough in C15. It is not described as a borough after this date.

Suggestion that earthwork beside the river on the NW side of Upton is the remains of a truncated motte. (Price).

Site observed in 1994. Partial as on private land. Viewed from the road and carpark there is no sign of a motte. However there does appear to be a possibly infilled pond feature in the west part of the field. It is suggested that this site is extremely dubious as there is no visible motte at the site (Dalwood). (Worcestershire and Worcester City HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Dalwood's dismissal of this site does not seem to have got into the published version of the Central Marches Historic Towns Survey, where nothing is mentioned. Although seemingly held by a sub tenant of the Bishop of Worcester in the C12 this does seem to have been a significant manor with a park suggesting the manor house must of been of some significance. It seems the earthwork, which Dalwood could not see, was well known to locals who thought it was Roman. However much of the area does seem to have been levelled to make a car park.
