Gatehouse Comments

The manor was held by the bishops but it is uncertain as to the evidence that they had a residence here. The bishops had a grant of free warren for numerous named manors, including Ichenton in 1259, which does suggested a residence here although such a limited hunting right may have just been for the manor's resident steward. If there was a residence then, presumably, next to the church (at given map ref.) or on the site now called the Manor House at SP38575774.
