Rectangular enclosure, 27m by 33m, largely bulldozed in 1962. Before this event the site is reported to have been embanked to the height of 4', with an external ditch. Whilst, "shape, size and position" suggest that the monument is a Roman fortlet, there is a local tradition of buildings standing within the enclosure, suggesting a post-medieval, or possibly medieval date. Gatehouse Comments

The has been a distinct tendency for any card shaped enclosure to be called a Roman fort. Stephen Moorhouse has shown that in Yorkshire medieval horse studs could have this form and various other features of several periods, not necessarily 'military', are rectangular ditched enclosures.
