Crugerydd-Carmarthen / SN535394-1188-scanty remains. (Castle of Wales)

One of a group of four cairns, aligned NNE-SSE, at c.35m intervals across formerly open, high moorland, rather mutilated, 16m in diameter & 1.1m high. (Coflein)

The monument comprises the remains of four earthen built round barrows, which probably date to the Bronze Age (c. 2300 - 800 BC) and are positioned in a line. All have a diameter of 25yds and measure between 4-5ft high except the southern barrow which measures 20yds in diameter and 3ft high. The northernmost barrow and that next to it look to have been disturbed in the centre. The sides of the barrows are steep as if containing a kerb. (Scheduling Report)

Gatehouse Comments

RCAHMW database lists as bronze age round barrows and ring cairn. This is a hill top site close to crossroad and isolated from settlement. Crossroad of minor strategic significance. Questionably if had any medieval use. It is not clear where Castles of Wales got their information but the 1188 date suggests this is taken for the castle of Crukeri, record by Giraldus Cambrensis (as 2 miles from Radnor!), usually attributed to Castell Crugerydd, Radnorshire. This seems to be an misguided attribution based on name similarity without reference to the original source.
