There was a castle at one time at Llanllowel, but no traces of it remain and its site is uncertain. DJM (Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Nothing on maps. Village sited on river crossing and entirely feasible place for a castle. Have these historical references been missed by the usual castle authors or dismissed by them? Given map reference for the medieval parish church. Does 'Great House' (NPRN 36977 at ST39279862) occupy the site of this presumed castle. Both the name and location suggest it was the medieval manorial centre although there is no particularly reason to think that centre would have been fortified (nor any to think it would not be fortified).
