Solitary form bastle. Side walls 1m thick. Present state - house (Ryder 1990).

The hamlet of Hill House has several dwellings set round a large yard; the main house on the east side seems 19th century. The other dwellings are all conversions of farm buildings (mostly recent) but the one on the west of the yard has walls in excess of 1m thick and would appear almost certain to have been a bastle (although said to have been a barn before its conversion to a house). The oldest part of the building measures 9.65m by 6.6m externally; there are no old openings and the walls have been largely refaced. A few original angle quoins, of typical bastle character, are visible at the south east corner (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
