Current building probably initially built by Roger Vaughan c1585-1601, but must be remodelling of true castle as existence of 5 storeyed embattled tower proves. Likely castle as well as house was larger. In any case vaulted brick cellars extend beyond E end .. (Pevsner). Now old peoples' home, gardens landscaped, no trace of moat remains. (OS) At what period stone structure built impossible to say as every trace effaced by comparatively modern building that occupies site ... No view of med castle is extant & Eliz building that occupies site has wholly obliterated all traces. From time to time foundations of it have been discovered below soil, which seem to indicate that it was a rectangular structure encircled by moat, spanned on E or park side by drawbridge (Robinson).
