Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of ? castle reads 'Name suggesting a defended site. No such site now apparent in area (OS 1976; OS 1977). Name may derive from Coed y Gaer hill to east (SO0084). Note also the names of Upper Caerau Farm at SO00078467 and Middle Caerau Farm at SN99928481 (see OS 1963)'

Gatehouse Comments

Not recorded in the CPAT records but recorded in the Coflein database is a 'A promontory enclosure, c.46m -S by 44m, defined by a ditched/scarped arc on the N & NE, the enclosure tapering to a point on the south. Placename 'Caerau' 100m NW' at SN99698480. It seems clear that the Caerau placename refers to this enclosure which is almost certainly Iron Age in date.
