Gatehouse Comments

Presumably the wooded hill is Coed Cribin, which is more a headland than a hill and isn't the site of a recorded Iron Age site although it is not dissimilar to some such sites. The placename site is actually beside a road where it crosses a minor stream. This general location, the upper valley of the Severn, West of Llanidloes would seem a possible position for a small castle, although the valley is only a minor secondary route through the Cambrian mountains. The most suitable position would be at a crossing of the Severn at the evocatively named Old Hall about 500m west of Castell y Dail. Without knowing the tenurial history and the actual medieval routeways it is difficult to speculate about this site but the possibility of a minor castle here can not be entirely dismissed.
