Mound on Moel Hywel (Williams, J, 1858). Note Moel Hywel lies on map sheet SN97SE and SO07SW. Mound no longer visible probably due to pasture improvement (OS 1980). OS say that Williams (1858) recorded a mound or tumulus which might represent the remains of the castle of Hywel ab Madoc (died 1212) or else his sepulchre. No trace of a mound when visited by OS in 1980 (OS, 1980). Low eroded mound on summit of Moel Hywel, now with trig point in centre surrounded by sheep scour. Mound is only visible on S side as scarp c. 0.4m high. Visible diameter c. 6m (CPAT, 8/11/00). (Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Isolated site and clearly never a castle, although this hilltop must provide a good view on the three days in the year when it's not raining in this part of Wales.
