Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust report reads 'Complex of three adjoining ditched enclosures in former water meadow. The central one is the largest with a slightly depressed, marshy interior. The other two are small with raised interiors.'

This is probably the remains of a Formal Garden, the complex of earthworks set in a former water-meadow, centring on a rectangular moated feature, c.134m by 56m overall. Scheduled as a moated site and interpreted variously as a decoy, castle or camp, the site's situation and general form suggest that it represents the remains of a formal garden. Unfortunately, no local documentation has so far come to light about the site's history. (Coflein–ref. C.S.Briggs, RCAHMW, 11.2004)

The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved moated site, probably for a medieval homestead. It takes the form of a large rectangular earthwork, of three adjoining ditched and banked enclosures, c.134m by 56m overall, and set in a former water meadow. Alternatively it may be the remains of a formal garden. (Scheduling Report)

Gatehouse Comments

Suggested as possible motte and bailey (unlikely) or as moated site (possible). The site is not directly orientated to the post-medieval house of Ffyngion and this might suggest that the formal garden is an adaptation of an earlier feature rather than a new construction.
