Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust record of medieval castle reads 'Name suggests defended site. Noted as possible site of castle of Cymaron (RCAHM 1913)'

The name ‘Cwm Faerdy’ (more usually ‘Cwm Maerdy’) is a relic of the Welsh tribal system of land holding. The lower portion of Cwm Faerdy wood is called ‘Castle Wood ’ (Tithe Schedule, No. 78). It was probably the stockaded dwelling of the ‘ maer ’ of the commot, or castle of Cymaron.

Gatehouse Comments

Gatehouse finds this a difficult record to intepret. The RCAHMW Inventory locates Castlell Cymaron at Castell Cwm Aran. The location given in the CPAT record is a hill top site but doesn't seem to have been woodland and doesn't quite agree with the vague RCAHMW description. The RCAHMW supposition as to the origin of the name is dubious and there is no actual evidence of any form fortification of any date here abouts.
