A ditched motte, c40-35m in diameter and 1.8m high, having traces of a counterscarp to the S and a small bailey, or platform to the N - traces of a building here are presumably those of 'The Bogs', a ruined cottage, noted in 1913. (Coflein)
Roughly oval motte 42m by 38m across base with D-shaped top 20m by 15m. Remains of embanked ditch at S. Traces of ditch at N and E with footings of two rectangular buildings visible which are prob not contemporary with motte. Possible bailey bank located, (Cadw, 1998) Cadw photographs taken 17/08/2000 show: i) platform on side of motte with stone exposed at lower end and ii) mound of stonework at upper end, iii) platform with building foundations, iv) probable quarrying on N sid of motte. (Cadw 2000b) Boundary of scheduled area amended in January 2001 to include 2 post-med buildings which lie to the east of the motte. The buildings represent a post medieval phase of occupation at Bog's Mount demonstrating a continuing presence there after the motte ceased to be used as a fortification (Cadw, 2001). The monument comprises the remains of a motte and ditch, dating to the medieval period (c. 1066 -1540 AD), together with the remains of two post-medieval house platforms. A motte is a large conical or pyramidal mound of soil and/or stone, usually surrounded by either a wet or dry ditch, and surmounted by a tower constructed of timber or stone. This site, which is also known as Bogs Mound Castle, occupies a low-lying position in marshy ground in the valley of the Knobley brook, at the east end of the Walton basin. The motte stands to a height of c.3.6m and has a top diameter of c.16m. The bailey was probably on the north-east side, where faint traces of a bank occur c.45m north-east of the ditch surrounding the motte. The stream and marshy ground adjoining it would probably have provided adequate defence against any attack on the west
The two post-medieval house platforms lie on the south-east of the motte. (Scheduling Report)
