The four-figure grid reference for this site (SN0234), gleaned from Rees’ Map of South Wales and Border in 14th Century, places it very close to Pontfaen House. Close by to the northwest lies Castell Cilciffeth (PRN 1538; SAM Pe407), an Iron Age defended enclosure. It seems likely that the site referred to on Rees’ map is in fact Castell Cilciffeth. A visit to Pontfaen House and Kilkiffeth farm yielded no information regarding earthworks in the vicinity other than those at Castell Cilciffeth. RR March 2009 (Dyfed Archaeological Trust Record)

Gatehouse Comments

The current National number for Castell Cilciffeth is 304365 and the spellings used in Coflein are Castell Caerwen and Castell Kilkiffeth. It seems fairly certain this is what Rees was identifying as a medieval site and it can be safely rejected as such.
