Monumental motte and bailey castle, thought to have been erected before 1086 by Roger de Montgomery. From a ditched motte, c.60m in diameter and 13m high, two baileys extend northward, the first, c.60m by 50m, strongly banked and ditched, the second, c.190m by 100m, defined by slight banks and scarps, with traces of a ditch. Castle mentioned in 1162. (Coflein)

Earthwork built by Roger de Montgomery in the 1080s, possibly adapting an Iron Age site. An oval outer bailey with a motte (9m high) closing one end. The summit of the motte is 15m across, and the bailey extends to 55m. The ramparts still stand 4m high , and the ditches were probably water filled from the surrounding marshland. (Dan Mersey)
