C13 defences of deserted town now vanished, possibly in castle bailey. (Bond)

The attempt of Llewellyn to found a defended market town at his castle of Doforwyn was thwarted by the English; even by 1330 all traces had disappeared. (Turner)

Gatehouse Comments

Soulsby suggest the town, like the castle, may have continued until the late C14, although otherwise it is suggested that a new borough was started c. 1280, by the English, at Newtown. It is clear that Dolforwyn town and market were never significant and that any town defences were ancillary to the castle.
