King, Bond and Creighton and Higham record medieval defences of deserted town now vanished, possibly in castle bailey

Gatehouse Comments

Whitecastle is not recorded as a borough in Soulsby's Towns of Medieval Wales or Letter's Gazetteer of Markets and it is uncertain as to if there was a town here, although a village to serve the demense fields is likely but not certainly within the bailey. The bailey is of a good size but not of such a size as to suggest a borough, and a modest stable could have taken up much of the bailey.
