A stretch of bank, 7.0m across and c.1.0m high, to the NE and E of Court Farm house (Nprn36715). A contiuation to the W was levelled c.1970. OS 1:2500 (1920) shows a pond, fed from the W, whose outfall (shown on OS Landline) may follow the W side of the enclosure, giving overall dimensions of c.43m by 58m, suitable for an IA enclosure. The church (Nprn3023) to the N, can be seen as occupying a triangular annex to the enclosure, c.42m by 43m. (Coflein)

Gatehouse Comments

This site has been considered by some writers to be a castle but is rejected as such by Hogg and King. Situated on slope overlooking the River Monnow directly opposite from Walterstone Motte. Not the most typical of positions for a castle but not unfeasible. In CA King writes "Nothing but the name seems to exist here." but Coflien report suggests earthworks do exist, although the possible Iron Age date given these seems a more likely explanation than a medieval castle.
