Gatehouse Comments

Site near church of Trelawnyd (Newmarket) in position entirely possible for castle. This is not the site of a failed medieval borough, which would support the idea of a castle (The Newmarket name dates from an early C18 attempt to make a borough.) but the church does date back to a least the C14. The name 'Coitier' is clearly an anglicized welsh name but it is not clear exactly what - perhaps coetgae meaning 'hedged encosure' although there is nothing apparently exceptional about the modern hedged field at the given map reference. The lack of archaeological and historical evidence and the relative insignificance of the village must make this an unlikely site for a medieval residence. Was this an enclosure (a safe place) for livestock sold at the attempted C18 market?
