Gatehouse Comments

A small dwelling beside the road is marked 'castell' on the first edition OS map. This appears to be a turnpike tollhouse on the map. Some toll houses were crenellated to give an imposing quality to road users. The house as it now stands is not crenellated but it has been modernised. The road on which it stands is not important but is straight and relatively wide and may well be a failed turnpike, one intended to serve the mines that were a feature of the area. Not a likely site for a castle or pre-historic fortification. The suspicion must be the house, at one, was crenellated.
