Castle Hill. Large promontory hill at south-east corner of Stapleton Park, steep drop to north and east gentle to south. West of New Road running north-south, much quarried woodland east of road, quarry and modern bungalow. Defensible location but no clear indications.

Castle Farm just east at 517184 (bore this name 1817 map. Site line of sight Wentbridge Castle Hill. Also rectangular moat (dry) possible feader or trace second enclosure at 563188 well east of village at Brierley Rein. (Sneyd 1995)

SE 516183. Stapleton. Part of a square enclosure with interior details is reported near Castle Farm. It is only visible on infra-red film. Reported by E. Houlder and M.E. Leach. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

The origin of the Castle Hill name is not known but is obviously not the site of a medieval castle. Was it the location of a C18 folly given the fad for these in this area, most notable at Wentworth Castle? The farm possible takes name from hill.The site at Brierly Rein, mentioned by Sneyd and now almost entirely lost to ploughing, was a homestead moat (PastScape 56034) of a sort not normally recorded in Gatehouse.
