Swinton - Earliest castle reference CASTELL LANDE (1586 PNWR). CASTLE DYKE (1775), and, on the 1843 Tithe Award, CASTLE DYKE OAKS can be located, centred at SK463986. East of the rail line, west of the canal, north of Kilnhurst. no trace remains. (Sneyd 1995)

Gatehouse Comments

Presumably a reference to some land held in demense by a local manor, presumably Conisbrough Castle. The map reference given by Sneyd would have been meadow land, of particular value for producing winter feed for horses, and, therefore, land that is likely to have been held in demense.
