A small bank, surmounted originally by a fence or hedge, is not uncommon among midland villages. The enclosure award (1769) refers to "the ring of the village" which is still clearly visible round the south side of the village. It encloses an area about 450yds by 700yds (Barley 1957).

Investigation of "ring of a village" to the S of existing settlement (Mackreth 1961).

00021 is not clearly defined as a bank. Enclosure ditches link to it and it may be simply a composite boundary alignment within the field system (TPAT 1996). (Nottinghamshire HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Recorded in Nottinghamshire HER as "DYKE (DEFENCE)?". There seems no real question that this possible boundary marker and stock control barrier was defensive.
