Balne - moats at SE608183 (Le Pat. just W.Balne Hall. She notes late 13thC. ref.), and at SE584193 just N. YEWTREE FARM. W. arm, shorter stretch E. arm, still waterholding, also at PARKSHAW WOOD, N. the intriguingly-named Chapel Garth Wood, WNW Wood Farm. Rectangular (N-S) platform enclosed water-holding moat with hooked arm to W. from SW corner, and isolated straight pond to N. of this, indicative of 2nd enclosure - SE584182 and (Le Pat.) SE581177 E. MANOR FARM, just SW of Chapel Garth Wood. One of these Vernoille Manor of Methams (Le Pat.). (Sneyd 1995)

SE 6122 1832 MOAT (GT) (Site of) (OS 6" map).

The moat has been ploughed out but is still visible as a cropmark (Ordnance Survey Small Scales Reviser, 26-NOV-1950).

The moat has been totally obliterated by cultivation and is not traceable under the present root crop (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Field Investigator, R Lewis, 27-AUG-1964).

A medieval moat is visible as a cropmark on air photographs, centred at SE 6123 1832. The moat is not visible along its entire length but measures 47m in width. The ditches are approximately 5m in width (Vertical aerial photograph reference number NMR MAL/65065 0166 08-JUL-1965). (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

Syned appears to have an incorrect map reference here. The moat is clearly marked as just east of Balne Hall on the 1st edn 6" OS map and recorded as such in the archaeological databases. Seemingly a moat in an area where flooding must have been a seasonal problem so probably more about water management than defense.
