(NY 731161) Outbuildings at Sandford Hall, 3/4 mile WNW of St Columba's Church, incorporate some medieval stones said to have come from a former chapel; they include the vaulted head of a small canopy (RCHME 1936).

Documentary evidence c 1356 of an "oratory at Sandford" (Nicholson and Burn 1777). (PastScape)

The Sandford family were here, it is said, from the time of K. John to the reign of Henry VI. In the 23rd Charles 11 Sir Thomas Brathwaite of Warcop and Elizabeth his wife sold to Andrew Wharton of Gray's Inn the manor of Sandford with all the profits arising from the same, and the said Andrew sold the demesne and rents to divers inhabitants, the Hall being sold to Richard Fawcett. (Curwen 1932)

Gatehouse Comments

Site of a gentry status manor house. Included by Perriam and Robinson in their gazetteer of medieval fortified buildings but there is no actually evidence the house was fortified either with a moat or a tower. The precise site of the medieval house is lost but clearly very close to the site of the current Sandford Hall.
