The present buildings at West Wharmley enclose three sides of a southward facing garden, with the large early 19th century farmhouse at the centre of the north side. The lower house adjacent to the east end of the farmhouse - the Cottage - and the range of farm buildings running south from its east end are thick walled early 17th century buildings. The east range measures c.16.5m by 7m, with walls of large roughly coursed rubble, around 1m thick. The south end has been partly rebuilt, but there are a number of old features, notably in the west wall, where there are upper and lower doorways with chamfered jambs of heavy irregular blocks, and bastle style slit vents. There are heavy old beams in the southern part of the range; the first floor is now very unsafe (Ryder 1994-5). (Northumberland HER)
