Site of a tower marked on OS 1st ed (1863) and OS revised (1896). It may have been a folly used for observations. Local tradition cites it as a beacon on which a fire was lit in times of trouble. (Northumberland HER)

Gatehouse Comments

The location of the tower marked on the C19 Os maps is now marked by a trig point. This seems a most unlikely location for a residence. There are also some weaknesses to the suggestion this was a beacon site (who would man the beacon and where would they shelter?). The site lies on the Pennine Way and it may be the 'tower' was a cairn marking an earlier route way.
