site to the south of the bridge's eastern terminus recognised through geophysical survey and sampled through trial excavation. Medieval chroniclers' descriptions of a temporary work erected on and adjacent to the bridge by King Stephen in 1152 allow use to pinpoint its location; the complex geophysical anomalies can perhaps be recognised as a motte and bailey squeezed into the space between the bridgehead burh to the west and the Portway to the east – utilising the defensive qualities of the former and overlooking the latter.
