A large hollow and an embankment has been suggested as representing a motte and bailey castle. Court Farm is of seventeenth-century date. (Shoesmith)

Members of the archaeology section of the Woolhope Club noticed a large hollow (former moat?) and embankment (possible bailey?). Did Court Farm once possess some sort of defence? (Herefordshire SMR)

Gatehouse Comments

Site of DMV of which church still exists and some house platforms survive east of the church. Certainly a location similar to that of many small castles and the fairly extensive extensions and outbuildings to Kenchester Court Farm could well have destroyed much earthworks. The 'Court' name of the farm and its location is highly suggestive of this being the medieval manorial centre but the evidence for fortification of the medieval precursor of Court Farm is fairly weak and there are rather numerous alternative explanations for a hollow and 'bank'. Historical research on the tenurial history of the site could be enlightening.
