VCH records this site as a 'moated inclosure with stronger defensive works.'

In 'Hall Orchard' are the remains of manorial embankments. Portions of three quadrangular divisions surrounded by moats with banks upon the crests are to be seen; also a large fishpond. (VCH)

Gatehouse Comments

The area is now built over but was damaged by ploughing before the development. Clearly the manorial centre but impossible now to say what defences the manor house had. The relatively easy destructive of the earthworks suggests the moats were not particularly strong, and the suggestion in PastScape is that some of the earthwork are of village shrinkage, but something about the moats did suggest some strength to the VCH.
