Gatehouse Comments

Presumably this is one of several barrows in the area, not necessarily the ones now called Barnby Howes, but which ever can be rejected as a medieval fortification, although it is suggested that the barrows may have been used as beacons. Presumably the beacon suggestion comes from comparison with the nearby Roman signal station overlooking Kettle Ness. However while the Romans did have a military system which did allow permanent manning of such signal stations medieval societies were rarely organised in such a manner. Clark also records an 'Andrew Howe' which Gatehouse has not identified. Presumably a similar site.
