A bishop's palace or manor-house at Goldhill was considerably used by Bishop Trillek of Hereford (Parry) from 1347 to 1356. Tonkin stated that the Goldhill referred to was in the diocese of Salisbury and was probably the Goldhill (Gold Hill at ST 8313 on OS 6' 1962) situated in Child Okeford parish, about seven miles south of Shaftesbury, Dorset. (PastScape–ref Tonkin).

Gatehouse Comments

What was Tonkin's reason for suggesting this site well outside the see of Herefordshire and the family estates of the Trilleck family? Trilleck was a bishop actually noted for rarely leaving his diocese (ODNB). There are Gold Hill place names in Herefordshire at Bosbury and Eastnor, both sites of residential manors of the bishops of Hereford. Did Tonkin exclude these sites? Were these subsidiary manors to the palaces?
