A large mound or small motte at Upper Brompton immediately N of the lane from Cronkhill. Rising steeply up to 2.0m on the S and W sides, but very gently on the E and N, this may be the site of one of the lost medieval farmsteads at Brompton, possibly the Manor Farm. Surmounted by a grove of old chestnuts, it is clearly not a modern feature and having a healthy growth of nettles, suggesting human occupation. The top is nearly flat but there is no evidence in the form of surrounding ditches that it was actually defensive. Fields immediately to the N, W and S bear the names Town Meadow, Big Townsend and Little Townsend, respectively. Documentary evidence suggests abandonment by c.1760 (National Trust HBSMR)
