Gatehouse Comments

It would seem reasonable to expect the house of a high sheriff to be fortified in some manner. The likely site would be the manor house at SU34289820 where a stone house of c. 1560 stand. This, and the surrounding landscape were remodelled in the C18 in association with the development of Buckland House so any archaeological evidence for C12 fortification probably long gone.
