Possible location of medieval motte suggested from local tradition. A 1620 map shows a roughly circular field called 'Castle Ditches' with a possible mound in its centre. (Bucks HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Exact location is unclear but area built over. The location appears distant from medieval settlement but beside road. If this was a castle it may well have been been outside Wendover manor and to have been deliberately placed on the manor edge for some local political/status purpose (as with Stafford Castle). However this is an untypical location for a castle, the evidence is weak and may represent a lost barrow or other such feature and this must be considered a doubtful site.
