The reputed site of a medieval castle. A C19 documentary source noted that earthworks remained at that time, but nothing can be seen today. Bryant notes that the earthworks of the Fitzrauf's castle remain near Scottow Mere. (Norfolk HER)

Gatehouse Comments

Nothing on early OS map. Local area generally under the plough. The tenurial history is complex with three manors in the parish at Domesday and others later. Clearly one of these manor house was Scottow Hall, aside the church. The location mentioned towards the common and somewhat away from the village (but still less than a mile from the church) is not unlike that of some other Norfolk castles but without other evidence this is a doubtful site.The given map reference is that given in the Norfolk HER to, a now gone, 'Suspicious crescent of trees marked by Ordnance Survey' although this actually seems to be a small building in a square field (With tree rich hedge lines) on the 1886 OS map.
