Gatehouse Comments

Castle field was at SJ600578. Castle Hill, another field in Wardle was at SJ599573 and is show as containing some low mounds on the 1875 OS map (But note the presence of nearby brickworks and clay pits). This was north of Wardle Hall. This is not now an area of settlement although the village may have migrated to the turnpike and canal. It may be possible this was a precursor site to Wardle Hall (SJ599570) although it may be more probable the fields were demense holding of the medieval manor presumable on the site of Wardle Hall.
