Leland writes 'Mr Paynell told me that on the Buckinghamshire side of Brackley he saw clear evidence that the town had once been walled, and that there were remains of the foundations of semi-circular gates and towers in the wall. (I searched carefully, but could find no sign of either walls or ditches.)'

Gatehouse Comments

The 'Buckinghamshire side of Brackley' suggests the Old Town. This side of the town has been altered by a railway and bypass road but if Leland could find nothing walls can be rejected. Presumably Mr Paynell misinterpreted a natural feature, such as a river bank, or some other such (an artificial flood protection bank?). Map reference for St Peter's parish church.
