Leland includes Dartford in a list of places in Kent with a castle.

Gatehouse Comments

Unlikely to be the priory/palace as Leland's Kent notes predate the rebuilding of that site. Possibly a blockhouse. It is also possible that Leland was just referring to the royal docks and works already in existence here and at Woolwich, or to the known blockhouses at Gray's etc. built to protect these docks. A last alternative explanation is that this is actually a reference to Deptford Castle which Leland does not, otherwise, mention.
