Leland writes "In a marshy area called Glassiney a certain Bishop of Exeter, Walter Good (Bronescombe), founded a collegiate church with a provost, twelve prebendaries and other clergy. This college, which lies in the valley of the bishop's park at Penryn, has fortifications and strong walls, with three strong towers and guns at the end of the creek." (Chandler)

Gatehouse Comments

The area was subject to pirate raids so a real defence although the college complained of being short of money and this gives question of how the towers were garrisoned and the guns maintained. I have presumed the guns were small and for defences against persons rather than against ships.
