A circular tumulus, one foot in height and on higher ground than, and beyond the flood level of the find-spot of the Broadward hoard (SO 37 NE 45). The mound is partially cut away on its' north side by the fence and ditch of an adjoining meadow. It had been reduced to its' present height many years ago, because a very large ash tree, (recently fallen), grew on the present level. Banks suggests that the urn found with the Broadward hoard originated here. (PastScape)

Gatehouse Comments

A very low mound, now lost, near Broadward Hall has been suggested as a motte but is rejected by King. Recorded in PastScape as site of Tumulus. This was mound of very similar size to Broadward Hall motte, although much more eroded, when seen by C19 antiquarians and was considered to be a pre-historic feature. What features, in eroded mounds with silted up ditches, make this one a barrow and the other a motte?
