The original building on the site is said to have been a royal hunting lodge, possibly of King John. The surviving building is a C15 timber-framed building, altered in the C16. (Listing report)

Gatehouse Comments

Wadhurst Park place-name a mile south but no specific record of this being a medieval park. No references to Wenbans given in royal records. While the manor may have been in royal hands, at time of king John, there is no real evidence of royal occupation. The story of a royal hunting lodge is probably a later invention intended to raise the status of the house.
