Centred at SU27761294, is a rectangular earthwork some 70.0m in length north to south, by 42.0m transversely, formed by a wasted bank some 6.0m in width and up to 0.9m in height with traces of an outer ditch. The northern side is heavily mutilated and gaps in the east and south sides could be entrances or mutilations. The work falls on fairly level ground and is at present partially covered with mature oak trees. It could be a simple coppice enclosure but the name 'Princes Lodge' appears here on the Map of the New Forest (Wm Driver 1789) and this suggests it could be the site of one of the Medieval Royal Hunting lodges (F1 FGA 12-DEC-69). The site of the present keeper's cottage is supposed to be on the site of the former Manor House of Canterton, burnt down some centuries ago. No signs of any settlement associated with the Manor. Gives the descent of the manor, mentioned in Domesday but gives no indication of it or the village's location. First documented in AD 1086 as CANTERTUN (Farm of the men of Kent). (Hants AHB)
