Listed by Thompson as a residential manor of the Bishop of Winchester. Payne writes 'It seems unlikely that Alresford, Hants was the site of an episcopal palace, as suggested in Thompson's gazetteer (1998: 186), because the parish adjoins Bishop's Sutton where there was a well-documented episcopal residence (VCH Hants 3: 41).'
