Research has suggested this may be the site of a motte and bailey castle. Fieldwork noted that Lime Copse appears to retain the look of a low motte with a 1.5m high platform still visible. Other earthworks point to this conclusion. The name Bailey Green indicates a possible bailey which is believed to have lain to the west of Lime Copse. The research does not claims to have conclusively discovered a motte and bailey. (Hampshire AHBR)

Gatehouse Comments

800m from parish church of Froxfield Privett, not the manorial centre. Some round barrows in area. The Bailey Green place-name is centred about 200m to the north of this site. The place-name is more probably a reference to the property of a bailiff rather than to a castle bailey (Note Basing Park place-name to NE). Seems most unlikely as a castle site.
